Founded in 1896, The Pilots’ Association for the Bay and River Delaware is one of the oldest state maritime pilot organizations in the nation. Recognized as a world leader in the technology, training and accountability of piloting, Delaware Bay & River pilots are responsible for the safe navigation of commercial vessels on the bay, river and its tributaries. As part of the association’s dedication to that enduring legacy, the pilots’ turned to Idea Lab Digital (ILD) for the modernization of their logo. While a bit hesitant to lose their iconic captain’s wheel, the pilots trusted ILD’s design team comprised of chief creative officer, Jay Winkler, art director, Jessica Baskin and designer, Annie Sencindiver to create a modern adaptation of the logo. Sencindiver simplified the wheel image, removing one anchor and minimizing the signal flags to become the crossbars of the anchor. Now the pilots have a modern mark they can be proud of for the next 120 years!
